It was normal to find Noctis wandering the streets of Moogletown alone, though today especially he wanted to keep to himself. He walked with purpose and speed, hoping to avoid the persistent merchants that lined the sidewalks. His sapphires eyes, although effulgent, seemed empty as it focused ahead. Ever since his return, nothing felt the same. It was as if his time here prior was nothing more than a dream.

He entered the park in the corner of town and the aureate scent of bloomed flowers immediately flooded his nostrils. He continued towards the center where a lone tree stood and he decided to take his seat there. Sighing, he found himself staring off into the distance before a figure walked in front of his line of vision. He blinked, trying to make out the person. It was a woman, her hair was a light blonde and she bore such…interesting garbs—the amount of legs revealed could easily rival that of Stella’s. But he recognized that backside her, though he didn’t attempt to greet the woman. Not that he despised her, in fact the opposite, he just didn’t know her too well and thus allowing his coy side to overtake him. And instead, he looked away quickly and began focusing on the small novel he had brought with him.

As she walked closer, Ashe noticed a form under the tree. After a few moments, she recognized that of the young prince, if she wasn’t mistaken, Noctis. She called out to him quietly, “Ser Noctis?”

She pulled her shawl tightly around her shoulders- her warrior clothes were not fit for cold weather, but she’d worn them in worse. He seemed to be lost in the book he was reading, so she called out again.

“Ser Noctis?”

Ser Noctis?

He hadn’t heard such a formalities in quite sometime that he actually mistook the title for a wandering thought. He continued glancing at the small texts of his novel before catching a figure gazing at him from the corners of his eyes. Immediately, he gently placed the book on his lap, bringing his stare up towards the to other as an apologetic smile became apparent across his pallid face.

Lady Ashe!” he answered, rising to his feet and began approaching the woman. He bowed respectively in her presence before speaking again, “I…apologize for not responding to you quicker,” he chuckled quiet almost nervously, straightening his posture.

Noctis wasn’t the most…sociable when it came to speaking to other nobility, and he figured arriving her in this world would help ease his shyness but realized no such progress had been made.

“…” his eyes traveled to their surroundings and his pale cheeks nearly inherited some color due to embarrassment from the long silence, “—Whatbrings you here to the park alone?”

What a pathetic attempt for small talk…

She bowed in response, smiling small. He seemed a bit nervous, but she thought nothing of it.

"Ah, nothing in particular. Life in the city, a royal one at that, tends to lack the comforting silence a stroll in the park can provide." She smoothed down her dress- the winds were strong and she was glad she’d chosen to wear something warmer than usual. A quick flashback to her trek through that Paramina Rift caused a small shiver down her back.

"I could ask you the same thing."

“I should hope Dalmasca would, given the state it was in before… but I think it will be a while before it starts to prosper like Rozzaria has.” She shook her head but subtly tightened her arm around his, “It’s not so bad, I’m simply not used to it. Give me a day or so. But yes, I am well, if not a little tired. Will I be seeing you tonight at dinner with your father?”

“Give it time.  The war has devastated many lives, leaving states in shambles in its wake; the kingdom of Dalmasca rises from its ashes, much like the legendary phoenixes, yet her wings are still broken.  Slowly, they will heal, guided by your hands, I am certain of it—and I shall personally face any who would try to get in the way of it,” he said with a smile, briefly resting his free hand over hers.

When she inquired about dinner, his expression changed from gentle to sly.  “If you wish to, yes, I shall do everything that is in my power for a seat at my father’s table.  I would be honoured to dine with you.”

Soon, they neared the Ambervale, and he slipped his arm away from hers to stand facing her, bowing with a flourish.  “Welcome to the Ambervale of Clan Margrace, my lady Queen.  May I show you to your quarters?  Or, perhaps, you would rather get acquainted with the maids and rest until dinner.”

"Your words are kind, and I hope they stand true. It is a problem that I am not a patient woman," She scoffed quietly, "But that is what my council is for."

"But, if I wish? Have you no wishes of your own?” She raised an eyebrow at him, lips turning up into a tiny smile. The question was in jest, but still genuine. She hoped his kindness was not for the sake of ‘The Queen,” but rather for herself, as a friend.

"You may show me my quarters. As I said earlier, I am not a patient woman, so I would rather not wait for the maids to arrive."

He coughed into a hand before approaching the Queen. He gave a smile and a short bow before offering his hand— he’d thought of courting the Lady Ashe many times, perhaps now was the time to pull out his charms. “Ah, the Lady Ashe gracing this town with her presence, what a day.”

"Hello, Tomaj," She said with a small smile. The presence of a Dalmascan always put her at ease, especially around Moogletown. "I decided to take a small break for fresh air, is all. I wish I had more time to spend here. How are you?"

She chuckled quietly before lacing her arm through his, “You may.” She was wrong- his flattery was pompous enough for his whole family. “I suppose it hasn’t changed much, has it?” She looked up and admired the greenery before her. “Green all year… It looks misleading. One wouldn’t expect it to be so cold. “She looked back up at him, “How have you been?”

“You bring me great joy, my lady.”

He smiled with a small bow of his head as she accepted, starting to walk at a comfortable pace.  As she looked around, he kept his eyes on her, arching an eyebrow at her comment.  “Shall I assume that you mean Rozarria remains more or less the same?  It is true, I supposed, compared to Dalmasca; your prospering kingdom has been evolving much quicker than the old lands I call my home.”

At her comment on the cold, he chuckled.  “Ah, yes, you speak true, and yet, you catch me off-guard, as I have no jacket or cloak to put around you.  My apologies.  Ah, I prefer to hear news from you than to speak of myself.  You have been well?”

"I should hope Dalmasca would, given the state it was in before… but I think it will be a while before it starts to prosper like Rozzaria has." It had been a few years since Ashe last visited Ambervale, and as she stepped out of the airship, it felt just as she remembered. A cool evening breeze greeted her, and she pulled her shawl around her shoulders as a response. Dalmasca was warmer during this time of the day, but Ambervale’s weather barely changed throughout the year. She didn’t mind it, however- the change was well appreciated, and she was thankful her maid had packed her warmer clothes.

She squinted in the distance as she walked away from the airship, and was glad to see a familiar face greet her.

“Good evening,” she called out to him, making her way over, “I’m pleasantly surprised to see that you took time out of your busy schedule to receive me.” She felt at ease already.

He moved forward diligently as she stepped away from the airship and towards him, a smile gracing his lips almost on cue as he saw her.  Keeping his gaze locked onto hers, he bent low in a respectful bow, his hand reaching for her to kiss her knuckles lightly, thumb lingering to brush over her skin before forcing himself to let go.

“Ashe, my dear lady queen,” he said brightly in return, straightening up.  “A breathtakingly stunning rose, as always—it is my pleasure to welcome you to Rozarria again, as well as it is my honour to be allowed to be here at this moment.  Might I hope you will allow me to escort you to the Ambervale?”

This said, he turned on his heel to stand at her side, offering her his arm.

She chuckled quietly before lacing her arm through his, “You may.” She was wrong- his flattery was pompous enough for his whole family. “I suppose it hasn’t changed much, has it?” She looked up and admired the greenery before her. “Green all year… It looks misleading. This time, he had not even needed to rely on his network of little birds to hear of the Dalmascan queen’s visit to Rozarria—she had made sure to send him a message herself, and the feeling that had stirred inside him was a surprise; something akin, perhaps, to excitement.  Even for a man like him, the attention of a woman such as her was an honour, and it was not exaggeration when he told her such.  He knew the Lady Ashe had matters to attend to with his father, but when they had last spoken, her eyes had shown clear that she was to kill two birds with one stone with her upcoming visit to the Ambervale, masking her visit to the youngest son with political engagements.

For the occasion, he had his aide pick out an outfit for him; something fit to welcome a queen, but also a friend.  Again, she had been extremely efficient, and he was pleased with the results as he headed for the city’s aerodrome.  It had taken some pressure, but he had managed to convince his family that a cortege was unneeded to welcome her for such an informal visit.

He stood alone, hands clasped behind his back, shoulders held straight as the time of her arrival neared.  It didn’t show, however, the way he had been pacing around almost nervously just before as he had waited.

It had been a few years since Ashe last visited Ambervale, and as she stepped out of the airship, it felt just as she remembered. “Time and reason prevent that, unfortunately. And I’m afraid a certain sky pirate has already made the offer.” She said the last bit lightly, though it was true. However an idea came to mind, a suggestion she couldn’t resist either. “I’ve no time for a true vacation, but business is not out of the question. And I do have business with your father…” She clasped her arms behind her back and canted her head, “It would be… convenient, if I may be so bold, to run into you there as well.”

He crossed his arms when she rejected the offer, lightly stroking his beard with his fingers.  He had been expecting her response, as he was aware of her situation; leading a country was inevitably time-consuming, especially with her diligence.  At the mention of Balthier, the look on his face was as if he had just tasted something particularly sour.  “Hmph.  It comes as no surprise to me that he would.”

His expression brightened at her suggestion, a smile playing on his lips.  “Then I shall clear my schedule as I await your presence in Rozarria, as I have the last time you have graced us with it at the Ambervale.”

"Be kind," She said, noticing the look on his face. She chalked it up to competition- both men were more like each other than they’d probably like to admit. She put her hand on his and squeezed before letting go, "I’ll set you know as soon as I can." With that, she pulled away, "But I’m afraid I must go for now. Thank you for your offer, and I will be seeing you."

“As much as the sentiment means to me, it is true I am a Queen, but that is not all I am. At least, I hope it is not. I was hoping that around familiars, I may be myself- all of myself.” His compliment caught her off guard- though she did not expect his flattery to cease, such a bold statement was unexpected. Not even at Ambervale did he say something like that. “But if that is the case,” She said, trying to cover her confusion with humor, “Perhaps you ought to invest in a candle.” His intentions were vague, but he did speak to all women like this, after all. “And a sharpening stone, as well. I dare call you a liar when you say our life is dull- your travels and the like make it far more interesting than mine.” Thankful to have thought of a segue, she asked, “So tell me of them. I’ve hardly left the castle since my coronation, and the vast majority of those trips were under the premise of business. I shall live vicariously through you.”

Surprise crossed Al-Cid’s face for a moment, and his expression turned to uncertainty.  In his admiration for her strength of character and the way she had risen to the throne of Dalmasca, he had never once stopped to think of her feelings in the whole matter, and the realization made him abashed to have been so blind.  He gently took her head again, bowing over it in apology.

“Forgive me, my lady.  Never would I think of you as no more than your title, and I am ashamed to have been so crass as to let you believe so.”

When he straightened up, her words drew another chuckle out of him.  “Then allow me to keep you as the flame to burn bright in my heart,” he said softly, brushing his thumb over her knuckles with a smile.  “Rather than speaking of travels, let me show you.  I can take you wherever you wish, and bring you back safely whenever you need to return.”

"Time and reason prevent that, unfortunately. And I’m afraid a certain sky pirate has already made the offer." She said the last bit lightly, though it was true. However an idea came to mind, a suggestion she couldn’t resist either. "I’ve no time for a true vacation, but business is not out of the question.
